Fausto Gernone

Competition economist, UCL IIPP

About

Hi there! My name is Fausto and I am a competition economist with a focus on industrial ecosystems. My work stands at the crossroad of the fields of industrial organisation, information theory and strategy of the firm. At the heart of my work there is the idea that value creation is a collective phenomenon. In other words, growth is a team effort! Therefore, it is important to design policies that adopt a systemic perspective, accounting for the interconnectedness of various elements in the ecosystem.

While at the moment I am doing a visiting research at the Haas School of Business, Berkeley, under the mentorship of David Teece, I am completing a PhD at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose under the supervision of Antonio Andreoni and Mariana Mazzucato. My research explores the dynamics of competition between complementary products in the context of digital ecosystems, investigating the role of coordination devices like industry standards, APIs, and open-access initiatives.Currently I am working towards the development of new measures to assess market competition by employing complexity theory techniques and network analysis.

Prior to and during my PhD I have been working in the field of industrial organisation for various years, specialising in innovation policy, Intellectual Property Regulation, Standard Essential Patents, antitrust and coordination, mergers and State aid.
